Thank you auvraydo for the great project used as the basis for this blog post!

HomeByMe offers over 50 plants and flowers for you to choose from. They vary in size as you can see using the chair as a comparison. (You can download this image for reference as a .pdf file – here)

The smaller flowers are great for adding a color accent to just the right spot in your project. (This image can also be downloaded as a .pdf file – here.)

To move your plants; click and drag on the blue circle to rotate it, click and drag on the blue horizontal arrows to move it side to side and use the vertical blue arrow to move it up and down. There is an added feature that, if you click the Collision detection button (1) or hold the Shift key down, you can move the plant down into the ground to hide the pot.

To customize your plants you can change the size and change the color or material of the pot. These are especially helpful to help match your chosen plant to your project. The Properties button (2) opens the Properties box where you change the size (3) and the color/material of the pot. (4)

If you do move your plants into the ground, be aware of plant leaves going into the ground too. Some plants have leaves that curve down over the edge of the pot.

In those cases, it is easy to leave the plant and pot a little above the ground and change the color of the pot to more closely match the soil color around it (1).

Another quick way to help blend the pot and plant with the soil is to make a Free shape (Rooms>For all rooms>Free shapes) disc (2), make it the soil color and moving it, holding down the Shift key to turn off Collision detection, until it hides the pot edges (3). Being in 2D mode is a big help when you’re doing this.

Use the same method for both indoor and outdoor groupings. The containers (1) are re-sized Free shapes, the soil (2) is a Free shape and the plants (3) are re-sized to fit into a little grouping.

Sometimes it’s difficult to make your plants and flowers sit directly on a surface. In those cases, use 2D mode to position them over the surface you want them to sit on.

Then go back to 3D mode and open your Settings panel. Then click on the 3D Measures button to change it to “yes”. Now you can see the distance between the flower arrangement and the table. Click in that box and change the dimension to “0” and click on the Tab key. Now your arrangement should be right where you want it.

SophiaTeoh does a great job of using a variety of leaf shapes, plant colors and pot colors to make plants the focal point of her kitchen in her Square House project. When visiting the HomeByMe Gallery, look for other good examples to help inspire you!

Quick tips:

Tip 1 –  If you have a group of the same plants in one area, rotate them in slightly different directions and make them different sizes to make them look more natural.

Tip 2 – Smaller plants may not have a vertical arrow, but you can add a larger plant that does, select them both and then use the arrow on the larger plant to move them, then delete the larger plant.

Tip 3 – Indoor and outdoor planters can be made using short walls or constructed using Free shapes.
