If you like sophisticated, clean and relaxing decoration then you should enjoy yourself in the greige zone. This luxurious master bedroom suite is an example of how gorgeous and comfortable it can be. A greige is one of a range of subtle colors that combine a cool gray with the warmth of a beige that creates a neutral, changeable color that will surprise you with a welcoming warmth while helping you feel wrapped in cool elegance.
Other touchstones of decorating with greiges are the use of black and white for furnishings while shades of greige are used for the walls to balance out the strong contrast with an overall warmth. Small amounts of wood add a glow and a restrained use of an accent color highlight important details.
A key to classical elegance is the use of symmetry to relax the mind and keep things organized. This bedroom is shared, but each partner needs privacy as well. Schedules can vary wildly so having everything in pairs and equal on both sides makes it easier. Each partner has their own private areas and easy access to the shared facilities. Each side has its own entrance door from the more public areas of the home.
The extra height of the walls allows the creation of a whole upper layer of windows. The green arrows above show how the windows are aligned all the way through the suite to provide as much natural light as possible. Hanging lights are used throughout to help keep floor space open and create a great effect in the evening.
Natural light is especially important in the dressing area. The long and somewhat narrow space is opened up by the light streaming in on all four sides. Mirrors on both ends provide a final appearance check and an extra sense of infinite space.
Wall-mounted cabinets inside each entrance and close to the mirror provide a natural place for smaller everyday items and the sparkle of jewelry to be added on the way out and deposited on the way in.
The bathroom has a delightful open shower with heated towel racks at each end.
And, of course, there’s also a tub with a huge window on one side and more heated towels and a place to sit on the other. The greige theme is carried through and still keeps everything relaxed and elegant.
Each side had its own sink and mirror. Right through the door are the toilet and bidet.
Decorating in a greige theme is so adaptable. Even in this small area the same elements of careful design work together to create a comfortable space. Once again, the upper layer of windows provides more light and warmth.
As we leave through the matching door on the other side of the bathroom we’re relaxed and ready to make our way through the day, whatever it may bring. Try getting into the greige zone when you decorate your next space!
